The Northern Star

Warming up for Christmas

Christmas, the most wonderful time of the year, is just around the corner. For Schweriners and their guests, the best way to warm up for the festive season is with the state capital’s Christmas market, which opens its doors once again on 27th November 2017. Under the motto “The Northern Star”, Schwerin’s charming old town is a picture of tranquillity and warmth, complete with glinting festive lights, Christmas decorations, and the smell of mulled wine, almonds and pine trees. The market is made up of atmospheric lighting throughout the city centre, countless garlands and Christmas trees with decorations, beautifully presented stalls in the form of wooden huts, and not forgetting the 25-metre tall fir tree which towers above the Marktpatz, shining in the glow of 10,000 fairy lights.

Wine, dine and wander

Visitors of Schwerin’s christmas market are drawn along Mecklenburgstraße towards the Marktplatz by shops with lovingly decorated window displays, and in front of them countless gourmet and speciality stalls. All over the place, covered seats and bar tables encourage relaxation and enjoyment. The exuberant array of gift ideas on offer inspires visitors from near and far. Children are attracted to stalls featuring characters from the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen, all created by local artists; in front of the stalls, they can immerse themselves in a magical world as they listen to exciting fairytales about Cinderella, Mother Hulda and the Princess and the pea.

Advent season at the Almhütte

Another attraction lies right next to the popular ice rink: a large, rustic wooden Alpine hut. Equipped with comfortable seating and decorated in the Alpine style, it is the centre of attraction on the south bank of the Pfaffenteich. The covered ice rink is impressively large. Here, skating stars of all ages can pirouette, try their hand at curling, or chase a puck back and forth. Another attraction is the Ferris wheel, which offers fantastic views over the festively lit Schwerin.

Christmastime culture

In the Marktpatz, next to the giant Christmas tree and the pyramid, you will find the Northern Star’s main stage. This is where performances, concerts and events are held throughout the Christmas market. It is also where, every afternoon, Father Christmas opens his grotto, meets the market’s smallest visitors and listens to their wishes. The regional capital’s cultural associations, as well as those of its sister cities from around the world, also present themselves on this stage.

Campfires and crafts

Next door at the Schlachtermarkt, it is somewhat more tranquil. The motto here is “children and crafts”. A romantic campfire and a “carpet” of wood chips conjure up a special atmosphere. In the children’s tent, little ones can try their hand at crafts or baking under professional supervision. Puppet shows and children’s films provide additional entertainment.
